According to a survey by Franklin Covey, only about 23% of those who make New Years’ resolutions will actually keep them.

Most of us give up way before we even get a good start…usually before the end of January.

It’s tradition at the beginning of the New Year to set new goals for ourselves. Why? Partly because it’s tradition, but mostly because most of us really do want to improve ourselves. We want to:

  • Lose weight
  • Stop smoking
  • Be more patient
  • Be more motivated
  • Be better at our jobs
  • Eat healthier
  • Exercise more
  • Stop unwanted habits

So, if our desire is to improve ourselves…

Often times you make goals without thinking them through, they are overwhelming or maybe they just aren’t the right goals for you. When resolutions are broken, you can begin to feel like a failure, which affects your self-esteem and you begin to lose faith in yourself.

But all low self esteem doesn’t come from childhood. Many adults can be faced with traumatic experiences that can cause negative feelings about yourself. They could be caused by:

  • Failed relationships

Independent or Codependent

Are You Independent or Codependent?

Independent or Codependent - Divine Mind InstituteBeginning in our early childhood, most of us sought to be independent…as our parents can attest when we said “I can do it myself!”

According to Dictionary.com, being independent means we don’t rely on others, we think and act for ourselves.

Of course we realize that in reality, being independent is having good self esteem, being capable and acting upon it. We also realize that none of us are ever totally independent, we need other people around us for many reasons.

Co-dependency

On the other hand, the codependent person is someone who has low self-esteem and is typically passive. They usually have a need to care for someone else, but neglect their own needs in the process.

The codependent person

  • Is an enabler who feels the need to rescue someone while covering up that person’s behavior.
  • Feels they never do enough for others, which leads to feelings of guilt.
  • Has possibly been mentally, physically or verbally abused by either a parent, a partner or a spouse,
  • Cannot refuse someone else’s plea for help, but has difficulty asking for it themselves.
  • Goes to great lengths to avoid confrontation and arguments to maintain peace, they don’t like to “rock the boat”.
  • Resists change

  • Is a “pleaser”, always wanting everyone to always be happy.
  • Feels inadequate and when they make a mistake they feel badly about themselves.

Where Co-dependence Began

We all started out with a desire to be independent as we tried to show the world we were getting big enough to do things ourselves, but somewhere along the line, usually during childhood, this unhealthy behavior began.

Because you want to correct this negative behavior, it’s important to understand why it started in the first place, something you may have no idea about. This is where hypnotherapy can help you. Are these and other similar phrases things you hear yourself saying on a regular basis? If so, then you’re probably a procrastinator.

There have been many wonderful quotes made on procrastination, but one of my favorites comes from Christopher Parker who once said: “Procrastination is like a credit card, it’s a lot of fun until you get the bill.”

Just as it can be difficult to cut up your credit card, it can also be difficult to stop procrastinating. But there does come a time when things catch up to you, deadlines are missed and emergency strikes. It would have been much easier to face the task that you have been avoiding than to play “catch up”, “clean up” or “face up”.

We all put off doing things every once in a while, but doing so on a regular basis can start to take its toll, in fact, procrastinating can be considered a type of self sabotage as it slowly but surely takes over your life in negative ways. It can:
